Oxford Sociology invites applications for Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2025

Oxford Sociology invites applications for Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Department of Sociology building
Deadline for Expressions of Interest: 5pm, 2 December 2024
Funder's Deadline: 20 February 2025

Oxford Sociology invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to participate in the 2025 Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships scheme.

This scheme enables early career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work, offering partial funding for the salary costs of a three-year academic research position (with the remainder to be funded by the host institution).

Fellowships are tenable for up to three years on a full-time basis, providing up to 50% of the Fellow’s total salary costs, and £6,000 per annum for research expenses in total.

Due to the requirement for matched funding, the Department of Sociology will be supporting a limited number of exceptional candidates for this call. A Departmental selection process will be conducted.

For your Expression of Interest, the Department requests the following:

  • A copy of your CV (2-pages maximum)
  • A 2-page draft of your research proposal’s case for support, outlining objectives, methods and expected outcomes of a research project as well as further research and career plans beyond the Fellowship.
  • Justification for suitability of the Leverhulme Trust as the funder for the type of research being proposed and suitability of the ECF scheme at the applicant’s career stage.
  • Expected benefits for the applicant and their project from being hosted by Oxford Sociology as well as potential benefits for the Department from hosting their Fellowship.

Please submit your Expression of Interest documents by email to research@sociology.ox.ac.uk by 5pm on Monday 2nd December 2024.

The Department Panel will assess and select the successful candidate based on potential for research excellence, practical viability of the proposed project, fit with Departmental research priorities, and potential to lead to permanent academic employment for the fellow.

Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Successful applicants will be notified in the week commencing 16th December 2024.

Please review the Leverhulme Trust website to review the full guidelines to confirm your eligibility to apply. In particular, please note the following key criteria:

  • Applicants must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK university or comparable UK institution, nor may Fellows hold such a post concurrently with the Early Career Fellowship.
  • All candidates must hold a doctorate by the time they take up the Fellowship. Those who are or have been registered for a doctorate at any time may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis for viva voce examination by 4pm on the closing date of 20 February 2025. Candidates who have held or currently hold postdoctoral positions to pursue their own independent research totalling 3 or more years are not eligible to apply.
  • The objective is for Fellows to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during the tenure of the award, and the project put forward should therefore not be a reworking or mere extension of the candidate’s doctoral research project.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Sociology Research Facilitation team with any queries. We are happy to answer any questions at research@sociology.ox.ac.uk.
