Qualitative Methods (MSc)

Aims

To introduce students to the basic issues in the collection and analysis of qualitative data.

A course on qualitative methods taught by Prof Federico Varese (8 classes in Michaelmas Term). Carl Drott will act as TA for the class. The course is intended to give an introduction to qualitative research methods.

By the end of this course, students should:
• understand the basic principles of qualitative data collection;
• have practical experience in conducting and analysing qualitative data;
• understand the ethical dilemmas of qualitative research.

Eight lectures/classes on qualitative methods in Michaelmas Term.

Students will be asked to collect qualitative data, develop a code book and write a short research proposal. In addition, they will write two short Reading Responses during the term.
