Qatar University has appointed Rima Majed to an Assistant Professorship in Sociology, which she will take up in September 2014. Her thesis, supervised by Dr Michael Biggs, is titled 'From Political Protest to Sectarian Violence: The Case of the Sunni-Shiite Split in Lebanon.'


18th Aage Sørensen Memorial Conference to take place in Oxford April 9-12

The 18th Annual Aage Sørensen Memorial Conference will be hosted by the University of Oxford and Nuffield College from the 9th to the 12th of April, 2014. In line with previous editions of the event, this year’s conference invites graduate students from the three founding institutions Stockholm University, Harvard University, and the University of Oxford, as well as from Columbia University, Princeton University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, to present and discuss each other’s work in Oxford. The Aage Sørensen Memorial Conference provides a warm and welcoming environment for talented junior researchers in sociology to receive feedback from their peers. It is also a great opportunity to make friends and build contacts that, as past experience has shown, often last well into the future.
The conference is open to everyone interested. The presentations take place in the Clay Room at Nuffield College.

£6 Million Research Grants for Time-use Research in Oxford.

The Centre for Time Use Research (CTUR) in Oxford University’s Sociology Department has won two major research grants, from the European Research Council (ERC) and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The Centre is internationally recognized for research using surveys of individuals’, households’ and societies’ patterns of time-use, and supplies data and other resources to the international research community. It is the home of the Multinational Time Use Study (MTUS), the largest collection of harmonised time-use data in the world, including 65 surveys, and more than three-quarters of a million diary-days, for 21 countries, covering the last 50 years.
