(Information for prospective students)
This course prepares students for doctoral work in Sociology and provides a stand-alone training for careers in social research. It is a 21-month taught course with four main components:
- Sociological Analysis, assessed by a 3-hour examination at the end of Trinity Term of the first year (15% of final mark)
- Methods of Social Research, assessed by a mixture of formal examination and coursework over the first year (15% of final mark)
- Two optional papers, which are generally assessed by a 3-hour examination at the end of Trinity Term; one option is taken in the first year and one in the second year (30% of final mark)
- A thesis of up to 30,000 words, which is submitted around the end of May in the second year (40% of final mark)
The thesis is often subsequently incorporated into a DPhil thesis.
