Graduate Funding

The University provides a comprehensive guide to all sources of funding for graduate study. A few are listed here ...

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC): Postgraduate Studentships

Because the University of Oxford is recognized by the ESRC as a Doctoral Training Center, it awards Postgraduate Studentships to students from the UK and EU studying for a doctorate. These Studentships cover university fees; for students from the UK, there is also a grant towards living costs. The Studentships are either for an MSc followed by a DPhil (known as 1+3) or for a DPhil only (known as +3).

This year the Department has two Studentships to award for the Sociology Pathway. In addition, the Department can nominate a student for a DPhil Studentship specifically for research using advanced quantitative methods; this year four such Studentship will be awarded for social sciences at the University of Oxford.

  • If you are intending to apply for the DPhil and want to be considered for these studentships you must also send notice of your interest together with a 1 page summary of your proposed research to Ms Anne Millard by 20 January 2012
  • We envisage notifying successful applicants some time in March.

(Students with Postgraduate Studentships are also eligible for the ESRC's Research Training Support Grant.)
