Professor Anthony Heath was one of the speakers in the panel discussion "How can Social Scientists and Government work together to strengthen public trust in scientific evidence?", held on 31st October 2011 as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science. The event was jointly organised by SAGE and the British Academy at Carlton House in London, home of the British Academy. Chairing the panel was Evan Davis, former economics editor on the BBC "Newsnight" current affairs programme and now presenter of the BBC programmes "Dragon's Den", "The Bottom Line", and the "Today" programme on Radio 4.

The Department would like to congratulate the MSc students on their examination results this summer. Particular congratulations to two students whose outstanding performance has been recognised by the award of the two departmental prizes given in honour of A.H.Halsey [1] :
A.H. Halsey Prize for Best Overall Performance in the MSc exams: Florian Foos (Nuffield)
A.H. Halsey Prize for Best MSc Dissertation: Zhiwen Zhao (St Hugh's)
We wish all students very well in their future careers, and look forward to working further with those who are staying on to undertake doctoral studies in Sociology.
[1] A.H. Halsey. one of the first sociologists at Oxford, pioneered surveys of social mobility and has contributed to many fields including stratification and the sociology of education. His magisterial A History of Sociology in Britain: Science, Literature and Society was published by Oxford University Press, 2004.
