The Department of Sociology is extremely pleased to announce that Professor Francesco Billari, Vice-Rector (Development) at Bocconi University, Milan, has been appointed to the Chair of Sociology and Demography. Francesco Billari is internationally recognised as one of the world's leading demographers, specialising in the area of family, life course research, and population studies. He will join the Department from 1 August 2012, and will be a Fellow of Nuffield College.
Professor Billari says, "I am delighted and honoured to join Oxford Sociology; building on the current solid, highly respected and ambitious foundations, I am looking forward to being part of a team which is working to put Oxford even more at the centre of the world map in sociology and demography."

Professor Anthony Heath was one of the speakers in the panel discussion "How can Social Scientists and Government work together to strengthen public trust in scientific evidence?", held on 31st October 2011 as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science. The event was jointly organised by SAGE and the British Academy at Carlton House in London, home of the British Academy. Chairing the panel was Evan Davis, former economics editor on the BBC "Newsnight" current affairs programme and now presenter of the BBC programmes "Dragon's Den", "The Bottom Line", and the "Today" programme on Radio 4.
