All ESRC studentship holders are eligible for a combined Research Training Support Grant and UK Fieldwork Allowance once the +3 element (i.e. DPhil studies) of a studentship has started. Currently, this amounts to £750 a year for each full-time Research studentship holder and pro-rata for Part Time Research Students. RTSG is intended for covering expenses which the student’s supervisor/department deem to be in direct support of student’s research, such as buying equipment and materials or survey costs.
Examples given in ESRC’s Postgraduate Funding Guide are:
- UK Fieldwork Expenses
- UK, EU and overseas conferences and summer schools
- language training courses usually undertaken in the UK prior to an overseas fieldwork trip
- reimbursement of interpreters, guides, assistants
- survey costs, e.g. printing, stationery, telephone calls
- purchase of small items of equipment e.g. cameras, tape recorders, films, cassettes or telephone and photocopying facilities in their outlet
- gifts for local informants
Applications for assistance are made through the Department of Sociology. Studentship holders should discuss with the Finance Officer in advance whether what they wish to claim for is possible under ESRC guidelines. After this has been agreed, the applicants will need to provide evidence of the expenses, such as receipts, in order to receive any reimbursement.
